Gimkit: How the Classroom Game Platform Works and Is It Worth Using?

Classroom review games have a simple problem: students can become more interested in winning than in the questions they are supposed to learn from. Gimkit takes a different approach by tying progress inside the game directly to answering academic questions correctly.

Instead of simply clicking an answer and watching a leaderboard change, students may earn virtual currency, energy, bait, snowballs, or other resources depending on the game mode. Those resources then power the actual gameplay. That extra layer of strategy is what separates the platform from simpler quiz tools.

For teachers, the appeal is less flashy but arguably more important. You can create reusable question sets, run live review sessions, organize students into classes, examine reports, and—on the paid plan—send interactive assignments students complete independently. Questions can be created manually, pulled from the platform’s Question Bank, imported from flashcard sets, or uploaded through a properly formatted CSV spreadsheet. The Question Bank can search questions contained in public Kits, which can save a surprising amount of preparation time when you need a quick review activity.

Once the questions are ready, the teacher chooses Play Live, selects a game mode, adjusts its settings, and shares a game code, QR code, or direct joining link. Students do not need individual accounts simply to participate in a live session.

That separation between questions and gameplay is one of the platform’s strongest design choices. You can use the same 20-question vocabulary Kit on Monday in one mode and reuse it Friday with completely different game mechanics. There is no need to rebuild the lesson just because students are tired of the previous format.

Why the 2D modes feel different from normal quiz games

Traditional classroom quiz platforms tend to follow the same loop: question, answer, points, leaderboard, repeat.

The newer 2D modes feel much closer to lightweight video games. Students control small characters called Gims and move through interactive environments. Correct answers often produce something required for gameplay, such as energy or another resource.

Take Don’t Look Down. Players answer questions so they can continue climbing through an aerial obstacle course containing six summits. Falling can erase a substantial amount of physical progress. One Way Out, meanwhile, puts the class aboard a spaceship overrun by hostile plants; students answer questions for energy while exploring, finding keys, fighting enemies, and trying to get everyone to the escape pods.

Those mechanics matter because students are no longer watching an abstract score increase.

But teachers need to control the balance.

The platform allows hosts to change how strongly question answering affects gameplay. In some modes, for example, teachers can adjust the amount of energy or other resources earned per correct response. If students are spending six minutes running around and thirty seconds answering questions, lowering the reward per answer can push the lesson back toward academics.

That’s what actually works: treat the game as the reward loop surrounding the practice, not as the lesson itself.

What teachers can create beyond standard quizzes

Current individual Pro pricing is $14.99 per month or $59.88 billed annually. Group licensing is also available: the official FAQ lists $650 per year for a department of up to 20 teachers and $1,000 per year for an entire school.

For an individual teacher who uses classroom games once every few months, Basic is hard to argue with. For someone running weekly review activities and independent practice, the annual plan makes considerably more sense than paying month by month.

Assignments are probably the most important Pro feature

Live games get most of the attention because they are visually entertaining, but assignments may be more useful instructionally.

A teacher can select a Kit, choose a compatible 2D mode, establish the goal, set a due date, connect classes, and share the assignment. Students then complete the activity independently instead of everyone needing to participate simultaneously. Assignments are currently a Pro feature.

This works particularly well for retrieval practice.

Imagine an eighth-grade science teacher has a 25-question Kit covering cells before Friday’s test. Instead of using the entire Thursday class period for another whole-group quiz, the teacher can assign practice earlier in the week and review the resulting data before deciding which concepts deserve class time.

Classes make the system more practical because teachers can see completion status and multiple attempts. Students connected through Classes can also save assignment progress and return later rather than losing everything when they leave.

How students join without creating an account

Joining a normal live game is intentionally simple.

Students can:

  1. Open the joining page supplied by the teacher.
  2. Enter the displayed game code, scan the QR code, or use a shared direct link.
  3. Enter a name or approve a generated nickname if that setting is enabled.
  4. Wait in the lobby until the teacher starts the session.

Students who are already signed in and connected through the teacher’s Classes can join even more directly.

Student accounts remain optional for ordinary live participation, which is useful in US schools where asking 30 students to register for another service can turn a five-minute warm-up into a technology support session.

How many students can play at once?

The official hard limit is currently 500 students for a live game, while 2D modes have a separate hard limit of 60 players. Actual performance can still depend on device and network reliability.

That 60-player limit is unlikely to affect an ordinary US classroom with 20 to 35 students, but it matters for grade-wide review sessions or school events.

There is also an important Basic-plan distinction. Featured free modes can be used broadly, while Pro-exclusive modes are restricted to five players when accessed by Basic members. Free and Pro-exclusive selections rotate periodically.

The biggest mistake teachers make with game-based review

The easiest way to misuse a classroom game is to confuse engagement with learning.

A room full of excited students does not automatically mean a productive review happened.

I would rather run a 12-minute game containing 15 carefully written questions than a 35-minute session filled with vague trivia. Questions should expose misconceptions: close distractors, commonly confused vocabulary, calculation errors, cause-and-effect relationships, and concepts students have previously missed.

Reports then become more valuable because incorrect answers tell you something.

The second mistake is allowing gameplay rewards to overwhelm question frequency. If students can answer one easy question and spend the next several minutes playing, academic repetition drops dramatically. Adjust the mode settings so continued progress requires continued retrieval.

That is the difference between “we played a game today” and “we completed 20 retrieval-practice opportunities without the class complaining about doing 20 practice questions.”

Is it better than Kahoot or similar quiz platforms?

For straightforward rapid-fire multiple-choice review, a simpler platform can actually be preferable. There is less for students to learn and fewer mechanics competing for attention.

This platform becomes stronger when repeated practice is the goal.

Its economy systems, movement, strategy, cooperation, upgrades, and changing modes give students reasons to answer similar academic material repeatedly without the activity feeling identical each time.

That advantage can also become the disadvantage. Younger students—or any class already struggling with self-regulation—may become absorbed in winning, collecting, moving, or attacking instead of thinking carefully about why an answer is correct.

I would choose the tool based on the class rather than declaring one platform universally better.

Can teachers see student results?

Yes. Reports are available for live games, and Classes add stronger tracking for assignments and repeated completions.

This is especially useful if you look beyond the final ranking. Question-level performance can reveal that half the class understands vocabulary but repeatedly misses one application concept. That information is more valuable than knowing who accumulated the most virtual money.
